Where to fish on Achill Island – local marks.
Shore Fishing on Achill Island.
Wherever you can cast a line then you can fish, as the saying goes. That is very true of Achill Island but there are also known marks that I have tried to detail on this site.
I hope that they help and if so just thank us via the facebook links.

This beautiful location offers great sheltered fishing and is most pleasurable.
You can even pop into the local bar in the Strand Hotel.
Two beaches and a harbour wall offer great fishing opportunities from both sandy and rocky shoreline.
This is one of our favourite fishing beaches.
Keem Bay gets remarkably little attention from fishermen but should not be ruled out as it has three remarkable fishing marks.
Big Wrasse, Pollack, Mackerel, Flatfish, flounder, Dogfish, Ray, Conger and Bull Huss have been caught here.
During the high season this beach is full of bathers and kayaks so is only recommended on quieter days or out of the peak season.
Fish from the rocks either side of the beach for best results.
Cloghmore Harbour on the southern most point of Achill Island is a working harbour but offers excellent fishing, with the chance of spotting an otter or two as well.
There are three fishing marks here and are well worthy of a trip.
Try a string of feathers from the end of the pier.
The summer months give good night fishing for conger, huss, codling, big 3 bearded rockling and dogfish.Daylight tides see ballan and cuckoo wrasse, pollack, coalfish, sea scorpions and mackerel.
There is a great wall-mounted plaque detailing Achill’s past shark-fishing industry. Well worthy of a view.
This beautiful stretch of beach offers it’s best fishing, mainly for Flatfish and the odd Bass, at very low water and when the holiday makers are not enjoying the beach!
Take the road next to the “Crossroads bar” and fish from the far left side of the bayclose to the cliff base. Parking is ample.
These marks fish well from May on, but September and October, as the sea temperature peaks, give the best overall fishing. Mackerel and frozen sandeel baits take the bulk of the species.
Fish from anywhere on the bay or even thestonepier wall but take car of tidal rush!
To the south of Achill Island near Cloughmore, you will find a breathtaking view and a curious set of rusty iron structures. This is great for the more able fisherman. The sea can be savage here even on the calmest summer’s day.
Never fish here alone and take good footware!!
The Bullsmouth as it is known locally offers a strong tidal race over sand and mud, with the whole of Achill Sound emptying in and out through this and Cloghmore Harbour at the far end.
This is also the Inishbiggle ferry service point so please do not block the slipway!
Achill has some of the best sea angling that you will find anywhere.
You can hire a boat for a few hours or for a full day’s fishing.
Achill also has its own shore angling club.
